About

1Password is a proprietary password manager from AgileBits Inc. of Toronto, Canada, positioned as the premium pick for individuals, families, and businesses. Vaults are protected with AES-256 encryption plus a unique 128-bit Secret Key issued per account, on top of the master password, and the company publishes a spotless breach record: independent 2026 roundups consistently note that 1Password has never had a vault breach, with an October 2023 third-party vendor incident disclosed and contained.

Standout features include Travel Mode, which temporarily removes sensitive vaults from devices when crossing borders; Watchtower, which surfaces breached, weak, and reused credentials; and a developer CLI that injects secrets into builds and terminals without committing them, e.g. op run --env-file with your normal shell. Business plans add SSO integration, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, custom policies, and a free Families account for every employee. There is no permanent free plan, only a 14-day trial. Pricing was raised in March 2026: Individual is $3.99 per month billed annually ($2.99 for the first year as a new customer), Families is $5.99 per month for five users, Teams Starter is $24.95 per month flat, and Business is $8.99 per user per month.

What it can do

  • AES-256 encryption plus a per-account Secret Key
  • Travel Mode for border crossings
  • Watchtower breach, weakness, and reuse monitoring
  • 1Password CLI and SDKs for developer secret workflows
  • Multiple vaults with granular sharing
  • Passkey storage and management
  • SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and custom policies (Business)
  • Free Families plan bundled for every Business user
  • Cross-platform: macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, web, all major browsers

Setup

Start a 14-day trial at 1password.com, create your account and Secret Key, then install the browser extension and apps on your devices. Teams import shared vaults via the admin console; developers install the CLI and wire op run into their build scripts.

Prerequisites

A paid subscription after the trial; SSO provider (Okta, Entra ID) only needed for Business SSO features.

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustMetrics-checked

Scored 8/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: October 2026 pricing checks confirm the $3.99 individual / $5.99 families / $24.95 teams / $8.99 business pricing and the 14-day trial; independent reviews confirm Travel Mode, Watchtower, the Secret Key model, and the CLI; multiple 2026 roundups state a clean breach history and an aggregate 4.7/5 rating across thousands of reviews. Strengths: best-in-class usability driving the highest employee adoption, Travel Mode is genuinely unique, developer CLI is genuinely useful. Docked for: (1) no free tier and a 33% price increase in March 2026; (2) closed source and cloud-only, no self-hosting; (3) no native email masking or bundled VPN. License: proprietary.
