Amazon SES

The cheapest high-volume email sending on the internet: $0.10 per 1,000 emails, deeply integrated with the AWS stack.

About

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) is AWS's email sending infrastructure, and it is brutally simple: a pay-as-you-go API that sends and receives mail, with no dashboard, no template editor, and no hand-holding. What it lacks in polish it makes up in price and scale. The a la carte rate of $0.10 per 1,000 outbound emails is the cheapest in the industry, and in July 2026 AWS added bundled plans (Essentials from $0.16/1,000, Pro from $0.22/1,000 plus $105/month, Enterprise from $0.23/1,000 plus $500/month) that roll in deliverability tooling and dedicated IPs.

SES integrates natively with Lambda, SNS, and CloudWatch for bounce/complaint handling and monitoring, and it supports dedicated IPs from $24.95/month. New accounts start in a sandbox capped at 200 emails per day until production access is approved, which reviewers note is the main onboarding friction. It is the right choice when you have engineers and volume; it is the wrong one when you want to be sending by lunchtime, as one reviewer put it, because bounce handling, templating, and analytics are all on you to build.

What it can do

  • SMTP and API sending
  • Inbound email receiving (Mail Manager)
  • Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM)
  • Dedicated IPs
  • Deep AWS integration (Lambda, SNS, CloudWatch)
  • Email validation (Pro/Enterprise plans)
  • Configuration sets for tracking
  • Suppression list management

Setup

Enable SES in the AWS console, verify a domain or email identity, request production access to leave the sandbox, and send via SMTP or the SES API/SDK.

Prerequisites

AWS account; verified domain or email identity; production access approval for real volume; engineering to build bounce handling via SNS.

Use cases

Trust score — 8/10

/10 trustMetrics-checked

Scored 8/10 (TIER metrics, metrics-v1). Evidence: pricing plans verified directly on the official AWS pricing page (updated July 2026 with Essentials/Pro/Enterprise bundles); $0.10/1,000 a la carte rate corroborated across three independent 2026 comparisons. Strengths: unmatched price at any volume, runs on Amazon's own mail infrastructure, deep AWS integration, huge scale headroom. Docked for: (1) no dashboard, template editor, or inbox placement view — significant DIY burden; (2) sandbox friction and paid AWS support tiers; (3) deliverability claims (VDM etc.) are provider-stated without published independent benchmarks. License: proprietary AWS service; pay-as-you-go, free tier for new AWS accounts in year one.
