AutoGPT
Open-source platform for building and running autonomous AI agents.
About
AutoGPT began in 2023 as an experimental autonomous agent that chains LLM reasoning to pursue goals with minimal human input. By 2025-2026 it has matured into a low-code agent platform: users define agent workflows and modular blocks, with a Next.js frontend, FastAPI backend, and agent marketplace.
The v0.8.x beta line added granular AutoPilot action gating (Ask First, Auto, Unsupervised modes), expert-scoped sessions, an Expert marketplace, E2B sandboxes, MCP integrations, and a multi-provider model catalog. With roughly 187,000 GitHub stars it remains one of the most visible agent projects. Limitation: it is still beta software, and autonomous execution carries real safety and cost considerations — the action-gating features exist precisely because unsupervised agents can take irreversible actions.
What it can do
- Goal-driven autonomous agent execution
- AutoPilot action gating with human approval flows
- Expert agents and skills marketplace
- Multi-model catalog with sandboxed code execution
