Azure IoT Hub
Microsoft's managed hub for bidirectional device-to-cloud messaging, twins, and zero-touch provisioning.
About
Azure IoT Hub is Microsoft's managed service for secure, bidirectional communication between IoT devices and Azure. Devices talk MQTT, AMQP, or HTTP with per-device identity, and the hub routes telemetry into the Azure ecosystem (Event Grid, Stream Analytics, storage, serverless compute). The Standard tier adds the pieces that matter at scale: device twins and module twins for desired/reported state, cloud-to-device messaging, and Azure IoT Edge for running containers on gateway-class devices.
The Device Provisioning Service (DPS) handles zero-touch onboarding: devices authenticate with X.509 certificates and get assigned to the right hub without human intervention, at $0.123 per 1,000 operations. Pricing is tiered by message volume: a Free tier (8,000 messages/day), Basic from $10/unit/month for telemetry-only, and Standard from $25/unit/month up to S3 at $2,500/unit/month. The IoT Edge runtime itself is open source under MIT; the hub is a proprietary service. TrustRadius reviewers consistently praise reliability while calling it expensive for individual use.
What it can do
- Bidirectional MQTT, AMQP, and HTTP device messaging
- Per-device identity with X.509, SAS, and TPM auth
- Device and module twins for desired/reported state
- Device Provisioning Service for zero-touch fleet onboarding
- Message routing to Event Grid and Azure services
- Azure IoT Edge integration for containerized edge workloads
- Tiered pricing from a free tier to S3-scale message volumes
Setup
Create an IoT Hub in the Azure portal (or via az iot CLI), register a device identity, then connect devices with one of the Azure IoT device SDKs using X.509 certs, SAS tokens, or TPM attestation. Use DPS for fleet-scale zero-touch provisioning.
Prerequisites
An Azure subscription; devices or gateways able to reach Azure over MQTT/AMQP/HTTPS; familiarity with Azure identity and networking basics.

Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Microsoft's own pages document the protocols, twins, DPS pricing ($0.123/1k ops), and the tier table (Free/8k msgs, B1 $10, S1 $25, S3 $2,500); TrustRadius corroborates the reliability praise and the cost complaints. Strengths: the default choice inside Azure shops, deep service integration, proven at huge scale, open-source IoT Edge runtime. Docked for: (1) proprietary service with genuine vendor lock-in; (2) certificate and policy setup has a real learning curve; (3) reviewers consistently flag cost at individual/small-team scale. License: proprietary service; Azure IoT Edge runtime is MIT.
