Balena
Ship containerized apps to fleets of devices the way you ship to the cloud: `balena push`.
About
Balena is a full-stack IoT and edge management platform that brings container workflows to physical hardware. Devices run balenaOS, a minimal container-optimized Linux, and you deploy with balena push from the CLI: the cloud builds your images, and the fleet pulls deltas so updates are small and atomic. The dashboard covers fleet health, logs, SSH access over a secure tunnel, OS upgrades, and release pinning per device.
It supports 100+ device types from Raspberry Pi to x86 to Jetson Orin, and the vendor reported 600 customers and 850,000+ devices under management in a September 2026 press release, including a 200,000-device fleet one customer built in a year. balenaCloud is free for the first 10 devices and per-device priced beyond that. If you want to self-host, openBalena is the open-source subset you can run yourself, which is the main lock-in mitigation. In September 2026 Balena appointed Leon Hurst as CEO with a stated enterprise and Edge AI push, so the roadmap is active.
What it can do
- balenaOS container-optimized host OS for edge devices
- `balena push` git-style deployments with bandwidth-saving deltas
- Fleet dashboard: logs, health, SSH tunnel, OS upgrades, release pinning
- Multi-container apps via Docker Compose
- 100+ supported hardware types
- Provisioning at scale with per-device pricing past 10 free devices
- openBalena self-hostable open-source subset
Setup
Flash balenaOS to a supported device with the balenaEtcher-style image, power it on, and it registers itself with your balenaCloud fleet. Write a Dockerfile/Docker Compose project and deploy with balena push <fleet> from the CLI.
Prerequisites
A supported device (Raspberry Pi, Jetson, x86, etc.); a balenaCloud account; a containerized application.

Trust score — 8/10
Scored 8/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: balena.io documents the balenaOS + CLI + dashboard stack, the 100+ device types, and the 10-device free tier; a September 2026 press release reported 600 customers and 850k devices under management; codecentric's comparison independently corroborates the per-device pricing and the `balena push` workflow. Strengths: the smoothest container-to-fleet workflow in IoT, credible device scale, openBalena as a real exit path. Docked for: (1) pricing is per-device and gets expensive at serious fleet sizes; (2) the September 2026 CEO change adds roadmap uncertainty; (3) deep dependence on the balenaCloud control plane for the full feature set. License: proprietary cloud; openBalena and balenaOS components open source.
