BeeAI Framework
Build production-ready AI agents in Python and TypeScript — with real feature parity between the two.
About
The BeeAI Framework is an open-source agent framework that started inside IBM Research and now lives under the Linux Foundation's AI & Data program. Its headline promise is complete feature parity between Python and TypeScript: chat models, memory management, structured outputs, custom tools, multi-agent workflows, and error handling work the same in both languages, so polyglot teams stop maintaining two mental models.
It is aimed squarely at production use — the docs and examples push patterns like requirements control, systematic reasoning, and hardened error handling rather than demo-ware. The roadmap points at watsonx.ai deployment integration and more multi-agent reference architectures.
The honest caveat: it is a younger, smaller ecosystem than LangChain/LangGraph or CrewAI, so you will find fewer Stack Overflow answers and community examples. What you get in return is a cleaner, more deliberate API and an enterprise-flavored governance story. A solid pick if you want agents in both Python and TS without learning two frameworks.
What it can do
- Full feature parity between Python and TypeScript implementations
- Chat models, memory management, and structured outputs
- Custom tools and multi-agent workflow patterns
- Production-oriented: error handling, requirements control, systematic reasoning
- Open source under the Linux Foundation AI & Data program
- Apache-2.0 licensed
Setup
- Python:
pip install beeai-framework; TypeScript:npm install beeai-framework(see the language-specific READMEs). - Configure your chat model provider credentials.
- Build agents with the documented patterns: tools, memory, structured outputs, multi-agent workflows.
- Run the examples in
python/examplesortypescript/examplesto learn the idioms.
Prerequisites
Python 3.9+ or Node.js 18+; API credentials for a supported chat model provider.
