About

Bolt.DIY is the official open-source version of StackBlitz's Bolt.new, an AI-powered full-stack development environment that runs entirely in the browser. It lets you generate complete web applications from a natural-language prompt, then run, edit, and deploy them — with the crucial difference that you bring your own API key for 21+ LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq, Ollama, LM Studio, and more) instead of being locked to a single vendor's backend.

The project carries roughly 20,000 GitHub stars as of late 2026 and runs on StackBlitz's WebContainer technology — a WebAssembly-based Node.js runtime that boots a real filesystem, package manager, and dev server inside the browser tab. It is MIT-licensed code, though the README notes that the WebContainer API carries separate commercial terms for enterprise deployment, so the MIT license is not the whole story for companies. Setup is a standard clone, pnpm install, and .env.local with your chosen provider key, or a one-command Docker run.

What it can do

  • Prompt-to-full-stack-app generation in the browser
  • Bring-your-own-model across 21+ providers including local models
  • In-browser Node.js runtime via WebContainers (npm, dev server, preview)
  • One-click deploy to Vercel/Netlify/Cloudflare Pages

Setup

Clone https://github.com/stackblitz-labs/bolt.diy, run pnpm install, add at least one provider API key to .env.local, then pnpm run dev and open http://localhost:5173. A Docker image is available for self-hosting.

Prerequisites

Node.js 22.12+ and pnpm; at least one LLM provider API key (or a local model via Ollama/LM Studio).
