ComfyUI
Node-based, open-source engine for image/video/audio/3D generation on your own hardware.
About
Open-source, node-based interface and local inference engine for diffusion models, created by comfyanonymous and maintained by Comfy Org. Workflows are directed graphs of nodes (model loaders, samplers, ControlNets, LoRAs, upscalers) covering image, video, audio, 3D, and text generation.
It runs locally with smart VRAM management and can run fully offline (137k+ GitHub stars). License is GPL-3.0 — which matters if embedded in commercial products. The custom-node ecosystem is community code with genuine supply-chain risk (a malicious extension incident was documented in June 2024).
What it can do
- Visual node-graph workflows for image, video, audio, 3D, and text generation
- Native support for SD 1.5/SDXL/SD3.5, Flux, Wan, HunyuanVideo, LTX-Video, Stable Audio, and many more
- Efficient local execution: async queueing, partial graph re-execution, VRAM management, quantized-model support
- Reusable subgraphs, workflow templates, App Mode, and a local API for app integration
- Partner nodes provide access to closed-source models; runs fully offline with --offline
- Workflows saved as shareable JSON (also embeddable in generated images)
Setup
- Download the desktop app (Windows/macOS) from comfy.org, the portable build from GitHub releases, or run
pip install comfy-cli && comfy install. - Download model files (checkpoints, VAEs, LoRAs, ControlNets, upscalers) and place them in the matching
models/subfolders. - Start ComfyUI; install extra functionality via ComfyUI-Manager (custom nodes).
- Load a workflow template from comfy.org/workflows or build your own node graph; queue generation with Ctrl+Enter.
- For fully offline use, start with the
--offlineflag (disables paid partner/API nodes).
Prerequisites
Windows/macOS/Linux with a GPU (NVIDIA recommended; AMD/Intel/Apple Silicon supported); diffusion-model weights from Hugging Face/Civitai.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 9/10
Massively adopted and actively maintained by Comfy Org with a weekly release cycle; local/offline execution means no data leaves your machine. Docked for two real caveats: GPL-3.0 licensing, which matters if embedded in commercial products, and the custom-node ecosystem is community code with genuine supply-chain risk — Wikipedia documents a June 2024 incident where a malicious extension was distributed.
