About

GitHub Copilot Spaces organizes and centralizes relevant content like code, docs, files, and issues into persistent context hubs that ground Copilot's responses in the right context for a specific task. Launched in May 2025 and generally available in September 2025, Spaces add custom instructions and always reflect the latest state of the main branch.

The December 2025 launch of public Spaces moved the feature beyond the organization boundary: spaces can now be shared publicly (read-only) or granted to specific people across organizations, making them usable for cross-company collaboration, contractor setups, and onboarding.

What it can do

  • Persistent AI workspaces combining code, docs, files, and issues
  • Custom instructions that steer Copilot within a space
  • Public sharing of read-only spaces outside your organization
  • Context always grounded in the latest main-branch state

Setup

Go to github.com/copilot/spaces and click Create space. Anyone with a Copilot license can use Spaces.

Prerequisites

A GitHub Copilot license; organization-owned spaces use GitHub's permission model for sharing.
