E2B
Open-source Firecracker-microVM sandboxes built for AI agents
About
E2B is an open-source cloud runtime purpose-built for AI agents: every agent session runs in its own Firecracker microVM — hardware-virtualized, with its own guest kernel — with Python and TypeScript SDKs for code execution, filesystem and git operations, terminal/PTY access, pause/resume snapshots, per-sandbox network egress controls and a secrets vault that resolves values at egress. E2B Cloud offers hobby-to-enterprise tiers, and teams can also run it inside their own AWS, GCP or Azure account (BYOC).
Independent coverage is strong: a $21M Series A led by Insight Partners (July 2025), customers including Hugging Face, Perplexity and Groq, and SOC 2 Type II on the enterprise tier. Figures like '88–94% of the Fortune 100 signed up' are company-claimed.
What it can do
- • Firecracker microVM isolation — dedicated guest kernel per sandbox session
- • Python and TypeScript SDKs: sandbox lifecycle, code execution, filesystem, terminal/PTY, git
- • Pause/resume snapshots preserving filesystem and memory state
- • Per-sandbox network egress allow/deny lists; secrets resolve at egress, never stored in the guest
- • Metrics and logs to your own OTLP endpoint; signed webhooks for lifecycle events
- • BYOC deployment on AWS, GCP and Azure; Apache-2.0 runtime source
Setup
- Create an account at https://e2b.dev (new accounts get $100 in credits — provider-claimed).
- Copy your API key from the dashboard (console.e2b.dev).
- Add it to your
.env:E2B_API_KEY=... - Install the SDK:
npm i @e2b/code-interpreter dotenv(orpip install e2b). - Create a sandbox and run code:
```ts
import { Sandbox } from '@e2b/code-interpreter'
const sbx = await Sandbox.create()
const execution = await sbx.runCode('print("hello world")')
console.log(execution.logs)
```
Prerequisites
E2B account + API key (E2B_API_KEY); Node.js 18+ for the TypeScript SDK or Python 3.9+ for the Python SDK.
