Eclipse Theia AI
Open framework for building AI capabilities into IDEs and tools.
About
Theia AI reached general availability in March 2025 as an open framework that lets tool builders integrate LLMs of their choice into custom IDEs and tools. Contributed by EclipseSource to the Eclipse Foundation, it provides first-class APIs for LLM communication, prompt management, agent orchestration, and MCP support, so teams can build domain-specific AI agents that feel native rather than bolted on. It won the 2025 CODiE Award for Best Open-Source Development Tool.
Theia AI is LLM-agnostic by design, supporting cloud models, self-hosted infrastructure, or local LLMs with full transparency over data and model choices. Adopters include AMD/Xilinx, which integrated Theia AI into Vitis, and CrossBreeze. The same release brought the alpha of the AI-powered Theia IDE with Theia Coder, an open AI coding assistant.
