Embedchain

Open-source RAG framework for chat-over-your-data apps in minutes.

About

Embedchain is an open-source RAG framework built on the principle of being 'conventional but configurable.' It streamlines the standard RAG loop: ingest unstructured data from many sources, chunk it, generate embeddings, store them in a vector database, and retrieve context for chat, Q&A, or extraction. A pip install and a few lines of code get a chat-with-PDF style app running, which made it a popular teaching and prototyping tool during the 2023-2024 RAG boom.

As a framework it now sits in the shadow of more actively developed alternatives like Haystack, LlamaIndex, and LangChain, which offer richer agent loops and evaluation tooling. Two honest caveats: the project had critical loader vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-23731/23732) in versions before 0.1.57, so anything pinned older must be upgraded past 0.1.128; and development pace has slowed, so treat it as a simple, stable choice for straightforward RAG rather than a cutting-edge agent platform.

What it can do

  • One-line ingestion from PDFs, web pages, YouTube, and more
  • Automatic chunking, embedding, and vector-store management
  • Chat and Q&A interfaces over your own data
  • Pluggable LLM providers and vector databases
  • Lightweight footprint for prototypes and teaching

Setup

pip install embedchain, add documents with app.add(), then query with app.query().

Prerequisites

Python 3.8+; an OpenAI API key or other supported LLM/embeddings provider.
