Gather
The pixel-art virtual HQ — walk your avatar to a desk and start a conversation with spatial audio.
About
Gather is the virtual-office platform that made remote work feel like a place again. Founded in 2020 by CEO Phillip Wang with friends from Carnegie Mellon and MIT, it raised a $26 million Series A led by Sequoia Capital in March 2021 after quietly amassing 4 million users — remote teams who wanted hallway conversations, not another grid of faces. Its signature is a playful 16-bit pixel-art world with proximity audio: walk your avatar up to a colleague and you can talk, walk away and they fade, exactly like a real office.
The product is built on a custom video-conferencing stack designed around spatial audio, with whiteboards, games, spotlight tiles and customizable maps. Gather has narrowed its focus to offices: in September 2025 it ended its free plan entirely, moving to paid-only access at $12 to $15 per user per month (with a 30-day trial), a shift that open-source rival WorkAdventure was quick to capitalize on.
What it can do
- Pixel-art maps with customizable offices
- Proximity-based spatial audio and video
- Custom-built video conferencing stack
- Whiteboards, games and interactive objects
- Spotlight tiles and private conversation zones
- Calendar integrations and meeting rooms
- Up to 100 people per space
Setup

Paid subscription ($12–$15/user/month); no free plan since September 2025.
Use cases

Trust score — 8/10
Scored 8/10 (TIER verified, metrics-v1). Evidence: 2020 founding, $26M Sequoia-led Series A and 4M users reported by TechCrunch; free-plan removal and $12–$15 pricing corroborated by WorkAdventure and Flat.social pricing comparisons. Strengths: beloved product with genuine adoption, custom spatial-audio video stack, joyful differentiator in a boring category. Docked for: (1) no free plan since September 2025 — a real barrier for small teams; (2) performance quirks and pricing complaints surface in user reviews; (3) closed, paid-only, no self-hosting. License: proprietary SaaS; 30-day trial, then $12–$15/user/month.
