About

Awesome GitHub Copilot is the official community repository (under the github org) of customizations for GitHub Copilot: custom agents (.agent.md), instructions (.instructions.md, applied automatically by file pattern), skills (self-contained folders with instructions and bundled assets), hooks, workflows, plugins, and cookbook recipes. A searchable website (awesome-copilot.github.com) and a machine-readable llms.txt index the full collection, and plugins install via the pre-registered awesome-copilot marketplace (copilot plugin install <name>@awesome-copilot). Content is community-contributed under MIT; the repo warns users to inspect any agent and its documentation before installing. 39,954 stars, 5,103 forks, actively maintained since 2025-06-11.

What it can do

  • • Agents: specialized Copilot chat agents, many integrating with MCP servers
  • • Instructions: coding standards and conventions auto-applied by file glob pattern
  • • Skills: self-contained folders with instructions plus bundled assets/workflows
  • • Plugins: curated bundles of agents and skills installed from the pre-registered marketplace
  • • Hooks: event-driven automations that fire on defined Copilot events
  • • Workflows: GitHub Actions workflows incl. Copilot coding-agent setup steps
  • • Cookbook: copy-paste-ready recipes for working with Copilot APIs
  • • Searchable website, Learning Hub guides, and machine-readable llms.txt index

Setup

  1. Install a plugin (easiest): copilot plugin install <plugin-name>@awesome-copilot — the Awesome Copilot marketplace is pre-registered in recent Copilot CLI/VS Code versions.
  2. If the marketplace is unknown (older CLI/custom setup): copilot plugin marketplace add github/awesome-copilot, then install.
  3. Manual use: copy resources from the repo's agents/, instructions/, skills/, hooks/, workflows/, and plugins/ directories into your repo's .github/ folder (e.g. .github/instructions/, .github/skills/, .github/agents/).
  4. Browse and filter the full collection on the website (awesome-copilot.github.com) or via its llms.txt index for agents.
  5. Review CONTRIBUTING.md/AGENTS.md before submitting; inspect any third-party resource before installing.

Prerequisites

GitHub Copilot (VS Code extension, Copilot CLI, or Copilot coding agent) — this collection is Copilot-specific. Inspect third-party contributions before installing: the repo explicitly warns that customizations are sourced from third-party developers.
