Healenium

Open-source self-healing library that keeps Selenium tests alive through UI changes.

About

Healenium is an open-source library that sits as a proxy between your test code and the Selenium server and automatically heals broken locators when the UI changes. When an element ID or class name is renamed, it finds the best-matching element in the current DOM using its locator history and machine learning, so the test keeps running instead of failing. A Docker backend stores locator history and produces a healing report with screenshots, and there is an IntelliJ IDEA plugin that can apply healed locators back into your test code. It supports Java, Python, JS, and C# on the web side plus Appium for mobile.

The project is Apache-2.0 licensed and actively maintained, with the web repository pushed within days of this writing. The community is small (166 stars on the meta repo, 201 on the web repo), and setup involves running a Docker backend, so expect some integration effort on large suites. It heals locators, not broken test logic, which is a genuine ceiling worth knowing about.

What it can do

  • Automatic healing of broken element locators at runtime
  • Works with Selenium (Java, Python, JS, C#) and Appium
  • Docker-based backend with locator history storage
  • Healing reports with element screenshots
  • IntelliJ IDEA plugin to apply healed locators
  • Disable-healing toggle per test

Setup

  1. Add the Healenium dependency for your Selenium language binding.
  2. Start the Healenium backend with Docker Compose.
  3. Wrap your WebDriver in the SelfHealingDriver.
  4. Run your suite and review the healing report; optionally install the IDEA plugin to apply healed locators.

Prerequisites

Existing Selenium or Appium test suite; Docker for the backend.

Trust score — 7/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 7/10 (TIER verified, metrics-v1). Evidence: Apache-2.0 licensed, EPAM-originated open source; main repos actively maintained with pushes within days of writing; 166 stars on healenium/healenium and 201 on healenium/healenium-web, verified via GitHub API. Strengths: genuinely free, works with existing Selenium suites, no vendor lock-in. Docked for: (1) small community and modest adoption; Docker backend adds setup friction; (2) heals locators only, not broken test logic. License: Apache-2.0.
