About

IP-Adapter (Image Prompt Adapter) enables a pretrained text-to-image diffusion model to generate images conditioned on an image prompt. Its key design is decoupled cross-attention: text features and image features pass through separate cross-attention layers, so image prompting stays compatible with the text prompt instead of fighting it.

With only about 22M parameters, it reaches performance comparable to a fully fine-tuned image-prompt model while generalizing to other checkpoints fine-tuned from the same base model. It composes with controllable-generation tools like ControlNet, and the image prompt can work alongside text for multimodal generation. The project comes from Tencent AILab with code on GitHub and a project page.

Honest limits: identity and style transfer quality depends on the reference image and the base checkpoint; it is a research adapter, not a polished product, and setup is aimed at developers comfortable with diffusers pipelines.

What it can do

  • Image-prompt conditioned generation
  • Decoupled cross-attention text+image control
  • Style and identity reference transfer
  • Composition with ControlNet pipelines
  • Face-ID variant for identity preservation

Setup

Clone tencent-ailab/IP-Adapter and follow the README; or load the adapter weights through the Hugging Face diffusers IP-Adapter integration.

Prerequisites
