Jina Reader
Prefix any URL with r.jina.ai to get LLM-ready Markdown.
About
Reader converts any URL into LLM-friendly Markdown with a single URL prefix — https://r.jina.ai/https://your.url — no SDK, no API key required for basic use. It fetches, renders (including JS pages), and cleans web pages and PDFs into text optimized for agents and RAG pipelines. A companion endpoint s.jina.ai adds web search, returning results already converted to readable Markdown. The jina-ai/reader repo is the open-source branch of the hosted service; paid tiers add higher rate limits and features via API key.
What it can do
- **URL → Markdown**: fetches and renders pages (JS-aware) and PDFs, returns clean Markdown via the `r.jina.ai/` prefix
- **Search**: `s.jina.ai/<query>` runs a web search and returns results as readable content
- **OCR mode**: `X-Respond-With: jina-ocr-v1` runs Jina's document OCR model over PDFs
- **Page targeting**: `X-Page` header transcribes a single page of a long document
- **Production use allowed**: README states the API is free, stable, and actively maintained as a core Jina AI product
Setup
No install required for the keyless API.
```bash
# Read any URL as Markdown
curl https://r.jina.ai/https://example.com/article
# Search the web, get Markdown back
curl https://s.jina.ai/your+query
```
For higher limits, sign up at jina.ai for an API key and pass it as Authorization: Bearer <key>. Useful headers: X-Respond-With: jina-ocr-v1 (OCR a PDF), X-Page: N (single page of a doc), X-Retain-Images: none.
Prerequisites
None for keyless use (works from curl or any HTTP client). A Jina AI API key (free account at jina.ai) for production-scale rate limits.
