KaaIoT
A modular microservices IoT platform with a genuinely free cloud tier and a 5-device starter plan.
About
KaaIoT is an IoT platform from Kaa Corporation offered two ways: Kaa IoT Cloud (a hosted PaaS with an unlimited free tier up to 5 devices) and the Kaa Enterprise platform, a modular microservices build you can self-host on any cloud or on-premises. The feature list covers the full device lifecycle: device and credential management, data collection pipelines, configuration management, command execution, a rule engine for alerts and notifications, and over-the-air updates, with open protocols (MQTT, HTTP) rather than a proprietary SDK.
The history matters here: Kaa 0.x was a monolithic open-source platform under Apache-2.0 (the kaaproject/kaa repo shows ~1.4k stars), while Kaa Enterprise is a complete rewrite on cloud-native microservices. The two share a brand but not an architecture, so old Kaa tutorials do not map onto the new platform. Recent vendor case studies include an urban telecom smart-pole deployment and water tank monitoring for Vodacom Mozambique, which are provider-stated.
What it can do
- Device and credential management with digital twins
- Data collection pipelines with batching and edge analytics
- Configuration management and feature flagging
- Command execution with near-real-time responses
- Rule engine for alerts over SMS, email, webhooks
- Over-the-air updates
- Multi-tenancy and customizable web dashboard
Setup
Sign up for Kaa IoT Cloud for the free 5-device tier and connect devices over MQTT or HTTP; for the Enterprise platform, deploy the microservices to Kubernetes on your own cloud or on-prem.
Prerequisites
For cloud: just a Kaa account and devices speaking MQTT/HTTP. For self-hosted: a Kubernetes cluster and familiarity with the microservices layout.

Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: kaaiot.com documents the feature set, the free 5-device cloud tier, and the Kaa 0.x vs Enterprise architecture split; the kaaproject/kaa repo confirms the open-source 0.x lineage (~1.4k stars); case studies are vendor-published. Strengths: genuinely free cloud starting point, standards-based protocols, self-hostable enterprise build, full lifecycle feature set. Docked for: (1) the 0.x/Enterprise rewrite split fragments docs, tutorials, and community knowledge; (2) adoption evidence is mostly vendor case studies, with modest GitHub activity on the old repo; (3) the Enterprise platform's openness is limited compared to fully open-source rivals. License: Apache-2.0 for Kaa 0.x; Kaa Enterprise is commercial.
