About

Kodiak is a GitHub bot that automates the most tedious part of the PR workflow: keeping branches up to date and merging them. Contributors label a PR automerge (configurable), and Kodiak handles branch updates and merging using the minimal number of branch updates — so you don't burn CI minutes on speculative rebuilds and master stays green.

Configuration is a short .kodiak.toml with smart defaults. Beyond auto-merge it does smart commit messages from PR titles, merge-conflict alerts, automatic branch cleanup, auto-approval for bots like Dependabot, and it plays nicely with GitHub's native merge queue. It is open source (MIT) and free to self-host, with a hosted GitHub App for teams that don't want the ops burden.

The honest caveat: it is effectively a one-maintainer project (chdsbd), so bus-factor is real, and GitHub's own merge queue has closed some of the gap Kodiak originally filled. Still the most configurable option in its niche.

What it can do

  • Auto-update and auto-merge of PRs with minimal branch updates (Eco Merge)
  • First-come-first-served internal merge queue; interoperates with GitHub's native merge queue
  • Smart commit messages built from PR title, body, and number
  • Merge-conflict alerts, automatic branch cleanup, bot auto-approval (e.g. Dependabot)
  • Single short `.kodiak.toml` config with smart defaults; MIT licensed, self-hostable

Setup

  1. Install the Kodiak GitHub App on your repositories (or self-host the open-source bot).
  2. Add a .kodiak.toml (even version = 1 alone works) to the repo root.
  3. Enable branch protection (e.g. require branches up to date) on your target branch.
  4. Create the automerge label; label PRs to queue them for automatic update and merge.

Prerequisites

A GitHub repository with branch protection configured; admin rights to install the GitHub App.
