MCP Git Server

Official MCP reference server exposing git repository operations to agents.

About

The official reference MCP server for git. It exposes repository operations — status, diff, log, commit, branch management — to agents over MCP, running as a Python package via uvx.

Operational caution: unlike the read-only servers, this one can mutate repositories (commits, pushes). Scope it to working copies you are comfortable having an agent write to, and keep pushes behind human review where it matters.

What it can do

  • Repository status, diff, and log inspection
  • Commits and branch operations
  • Scales to multiple repositories
  • Runs isolated via uvx

Setup

  1. Install Python 3.10+ and uv; ensure git is on PATH.
  2. Add to your MCP client config: command uvx, args ["mcp-server-git", "--repository", "/path/to/repo"].
  3. Restart the client and verify with the MCP Inspector.

Prerequisites

An MCP-compatible client; Python 3.10+ with uv; git installed.

Trust score — 9/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 9/10 (verified tier). Official reference server, ~91k monorepo stars, actively maintained, uvx install path verified in the README. Docked for the mixed license state (MIT→Apache-2.0 transition) and an operational note: it can mutate repos (commit/push), so it belongs on working copies only — a scoping caution, not a defect.

  • · 91,183 GitHub stars (log-scaled vs catalog peers)
  • · last push 1d ago; 9 releases/12mo; 488 open issues
  • · manual review: official reference; operates on local repos — can commit/push, so destructive-action risk; license: MIT transitioning to Apache-2.0 (project-wide relicense in progress; LICENSE file)
