Meteomatics
Swiss weather API blending 40+ models into 90 m downscaled data, backed by its own 1 km models and atmospheric weather drones.
About
Meteomatics is a Swiss weather-technology company from St. Gallen, founded in 2012 by mathematician Martin Fengler. It is one of the few weather vendors that also flies its own observation hardware: Meteodrones that climb to 6 km to sample the mid and lower atmosphere where commercial models are weakest. Its API blends 40+ sources — ECMWF, GFS, DWD ICON, UK Met Office models, plus AI models like GraphCast — post-processes them and downscales everything to about 90 m, with proprietary EURO1k and US1k models running natively at 1 km over Europe and the US.
The catalog is enormous at 1,800+ parameters, with historical data back to 1979 and climate scenarios to 2100, and responses served in JSON, CSV, NetCDF, GeoTIFF or via WMS/WFS. There is a 14-day trial capped at 1,000 queries and a non-commercial Free Basic tier; real business access is custom-priced through sales. Energy, aviation, shipping, insurance and agriculture teams are the core audience.
What it can do
- 1,800+ weather parameters via REST API
- 40+ blended model sources including AI models
- 90 m global downscaling, 1 km EURO1k/US1k models
- Historical data from 1979, climate scenarios to 2100
- JSON, CSV, XML, NetCDF, GeoTIFF, WMS/WFS output
- Proprietary Meteodrone atmospheric profiling data
Setup
Request a trial or Free Basic account on meteomatics.com, get API credentials, and query by coordinates and time — the same REST pattern covers forecasts, history and climate scenarios.
Prerequisites
Trial or account signup; business packages require a sales conversation.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (TIER metrics, metrics-v1). Evidence: founding (2012, Martin Fengler, St. Gallen), EURO1k launch (2022) and Meteodrone program verified via Wikipedia and a detailed third-party API audit; breadth of 1,800+ parameters corroborated by independent comparisons. Strengths: own observation hardware and 1 km models are a real technical edge, transparent about sources, 90 m downscaling. Docked for: (1) no public pricing — commercial access requires sales; (2) only time-limited trial or non-commercial free tier; (3) breadth creates a real learning curve. License: proprietary; trial 1,000 queries/14 days, Free Basic non-commercial, business custom.
