NATS
Cloud-native messaging with JetStream persistence, KV, and object store.
About
NATS is a CNCF messaging system built for simplicity and speed: a single lightweight server handles pub/sub, request/reply, queue groups, and service discovery with subject-based addressing. JetStream adds durable streams with replay, exactly-once-ish consumers, plus a built-in key-value store and object store, so one dependency can cover messaging, caching, and state.
Synadia, founded by NATS creator Derek Collison, stewards the project and sells Synadia Cloud (NGS), a global managed NATS network. A 2024-2025 licensing dispute between Synadia and the CNCF was settled in May 2025 with the server remaining Apache 2.0 under CNCF stewardship. NATS 2.11 added per-message TTL for ephemeral state patterns. It is a favorite substrate for microservices, edge fleets, and increasingly for agent control planes that need low-latency RPC plus durable event streams in one system.
What it can do
- Subject-based pub/sub and request/reply
- JetStream durable streams with replay
- Built-in KV store and object store
- Clustering with no single point of failure
- Apache 2.0 under CNCF stewardship
Setup
Run nats:latest with -js via Docker, or connect to Synadia Cloud with a credentials file.
