Neo4j MCP Server
Community MCP server exposing Neo4j graph database operations to agents.
About
The community Neo4j MCP server (neo4j-contrib/mcp-neo4j). It lets agents run Cypher queries against a Neo4j graph database — useful for knowledge-graph-backed agents and graph RAG setups.
Requires a running Neo4j instance and credentials (NEO4J_* env vars). Newer project (~1k stars); evaluate query permissions carefully since agents get raw Cypher access.
What it can do
- Cypher query execution for agents
- Graph database read/write access
- Knowledge-graph-backed agent workflows
- Configurable connection via env vars
Setup
- Run a Neo4j instance (Docker or AuraDB).
- Set
NEO4J_URI,NEO4J_USERNAME,NEO4J_PASSWORDenv vars. - Add the server to your MCP client config.
- Restart the client and test a read query first.
Prerequisites
An MCP-compatible client; a running Neo4j instance with credentials.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (metrics tier). MIT-licensed community project, healthy maintenance (21 releases/12mo, pushed Sept 2026), but a smaller adoption footprint (~1k stars) and it hands agents raw Cypher — the security posture depends entirely on how you scope the Neo4j user, which is a real operational caveat. Metrics are solid; depth of independent review is thinner, hence metrics tier.
