NVIDIA NIM
Containerized inference microservices — validated, GPU-optimized model serving with an OpenAI-compatible API.
About
NVIDIA NIM (NVIDIA Inference Microservices) packages models into Docker containers with GPU-aware serving configurations — validated containers, curated weights, and direct alignment with upstream inference engines — so developers can deploy production-grade AI with predictable performance. NIM for LLMs exposes OpenAI-compatible endpoints, supports 100+ optimized open models (Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Nemotron), and the 2.0 generation moved to one-container-one-backend on vLLM for raw upstream performance without abstraction latency. NIM 2.0.12 was reported to deliver 2.5x throughput gains on Nemotron 3 Ultra for agentic workloads.
You can evaluate models through NVIDIA-hosted endpoints in the API Catalog (free for developers via the NVIDIA Developer Program), then deploy the same container on your own NVIDIA-accelerated infrastructure — any cloud or data center — with enterprise features like SOC 2 compliance, data residency controls, LoRA adapter support, and SLA guarantees.
Limitation: the weights may be open but the containers and runtime are proprietary NVIDIA software, and you need NVIDIA GPUs to self-host — there is no AMD or CPU path. OpenAI compatibility is scoped per model, endpoint, and NIM release, not a blanket promise across the vision, speech, and retrieval catalogs.
What it can do
- Validated Docker containers with GPU-aware serving profiles
- OpenAI-compatible API endpoints across 100+ optimized models
- TensorRT-LLM and vLLM backends with speculative decoding
- Hosted evaluation plus self-hosted deployment with enterprise SLAs
Setup
Evaluate free via the NVIDIA API Catalog, then docker run a NIM container on NVIDIA GPU infrastructure.
Prerequisites
NVIDIA GPU (for self-hosting) or just an API key for the hosted catalog; Docker for container deployment.
