About

Ona is the company formerly known as Gitpod, the Kiel, Germany-based pioneer of cloud development environments. In September 2025 it rebranded to Ona and rebuilt its platform around AI agent orchestration — 'mission control for your personal team of software engineering agents' — sunsetting the classic pay-as-you-go cloud IDE in October 2025. Ona runs agent workloads inside secure, reproducible cloud sandboxes with access controls and audit trails, and its enterprise agent usage reportedly grew 13-fold in 2026.

On June 11, 2026, OpenAI announced it would acquire Ona to give its Codex coding agent persistent cloud workspaces where agents can run multi-step tasks over hours or days — even after the developer closes the laptop. The architecture keeps execution inside the customer's own cloud infrastructure while OpenAI provides intelligence and orchestration, directly addressing enterprise data-control anxiety. Terms were not disclosed and the deal was subject to regulatory approval; the Ona team was set to join OpenAI's Codex group.

What it can do

  • Persistent cloud environments where AI agents run for hours or days
  • Task-in, PR-out background agent workflows with Agent Fleets
  • VPC deployment with kernel-level policy enforcement
  • GPU access and machines up to 32 cores / 128GB RAM

Setup

Ona's platform is enterprise-sold with VPC deployment options; the legacy Gitpod Classic product was sunset October 2025.

Prerequisites

Enterprise contract; cloud infrastructure for VPC deployment.
