About

The OpenAI Agents SDK (openai/openai-agents-python, MIT, ~30k stars) is OpenAI's official framework for agentic applications: agent definitions with instructions and tools, handoffs between agents, guardrails, sessions, and tracing. It is the production successor to the experimental Swarm project.

Install with pip install openai-agents (extras for voice and Redis sessions). Docs at openai.github.io/openai-agents-python. If you build on OpenAI models, this is the default framework choice.

What it can do

  • Agent definitions with tools and handoffs
  • Guardrails and input/output validation
  • Sessions and memory
  • Built-in tracing
  • Voice and realtime agent support

Setup

  1. pip install openai-agents.
  2. Set OPENAI_API_KEY.
  3. Define agents with instructions, tools, and handoffs per the quickstart.
  4. Run with Runner.run(); add guardrails and session memory as needed.

Prerequisites

Python 3.9+; OpenAI API key.
