OpenFeature
The vendor-neutral open standard for feature flagging — one API, any provider, no lock-in.
About
OpenFeature is a CNCF incubating project that defines an open standard for feature flag management: a vendor-neutral API and multi-language SDKs so application code evaluates flags the same way regardless of the backend. The key abstraction is the provider — your app talks to the OpenFeature SDK, and a provider plugs in LaunchDarkly, Flagsmith, flagd, GO Feature Flag, GrowthBook, or an in-house system. Swap the provider and your flag calls stay identical.
It also standardizes hooks (before/after/error lifecycle callbacks), evaluation context, and observability integrations with OpenTelemetry, and the ecosystem includes flagd, the CNCF reference evaluation daemon. It is a specification and SDK, not a product: you still need a flag backend behind it. The spec repository is Apache-2.0 licensed and actively developed by vendors and contributors.
What it can do
- Vendor-neutral flag evaluation API across Go, Java, Python, JavaScript, .NET, and more
- Provider model: swap backends without rewriting flag calls
- Evaluation context and targeting semantics
- Hooks for logging, validation, and telemetry (OpenTelemetry)
- flagd reference implementation for local/dev use
- CNCF incubating; broad vendor participation
Setup
Add the OpenFeature SDK for your language, install the provider package for your flag backend, and set it as the global provider.
Prerequisites
A flag backend with an OpenFeature provider (vendor or open source).
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (VERIFIED tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: CNCF incubating project with multi-vendor governance (Governance Committee 2026-2028 term documented), spec repo stars verified via GitHub API, providers shipped by LaunchDarkly, Flagsmith, GrowthBook, and open tools. Strengths: the only credible vendor-neutral flag API — it genuinely removes lock-in; broad language coverage; OpenTelemetry hooks; backed by CNCF process. Docked for: (1) it is a standard, not a product — you still need and must choose a backend; (2) provider quality and feature parity vary, so the standard is only as good as the provider you pick; (3) incubating, not graduated, so the spec can still evolve. License: Apache-2.0 (spec and SDKs).
