Replicate
Run thousands of open AI models through one simple cloud API.
About
Cloud platform hosting thousands of open-source and community machine-learning models behind a uniform HTTP API — you send an input, it runs on Replicate's GPUs, and returns the output, with no infrastructure to manage.
Billing is pay-per-second of GPU time with no idle cost; new accounts get free credits to start. Custom models can be packaged with Cog, its open-source container format, and pushed to deploy private API endpoints.
What it can do
- Thousands of hosted models: image gen/editing, video, audio/speech, LLMs, embeddings, fine-tunes
- Pay-per-second GPU billing with no idle cost; per-model hardware tiers
- Async inference via webhooks, polling, or streaming; prediction cancellation
- Cog: open-source container format to package and deploy your own models as API endpoints
- Official Python/Node SDKs; plain JSON-over-HTTPS works from any language
- Model playground UI + input/output schema and version history on every model page
Setup
- Sign up at replicate.com (GitHub or email); claim the starter free credit.
- Create an API token at replicate.com/account/api-tokens and export it (
REPLICATE_API_TOKEN). - Install a client (
pip install replicate/npm install replicate) or call the HTTP API directly. - Run a model:
replicate.run("black-forest-labs/flux-schnell", input={"prompt": "..."}). - For long jobs (video, upscaling), use webhooks instead of blocking, and poll
GET /v1/predictions/{id}. - For production, pin the exact model version hash and test new versions in staging.
Prerequisites
A Replicate account + API token (free credits on signup); a payment method for usage beyond free credit.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 7/10
Established platform with a well-documented API, a huge model catalog, and genuinely simple pricing — independent tutorial and API roundup corroborate the product claims. Reservations: per-second pricing is expensive at high volume, community-model quality varies, cold starts add latency, there is no contractual SLA, and a compliance reviewer would want to check its data-handling posture for regulated workloads. Pricing examples in coverage are indicative, not verified.
How the trust score is built
Full methodology →- Adoption · stars/downloads, log-scaled vs peers
- 9.2/10
- Maintenance · recency, releases, issue load
- 5.0/10
- Openness · license + docs
- 5.1/10
- Manual review · sanity read + red-flag check
- 7.0/10
- · npm SDK ~2,516,773/mo as adoption proxy — thinner evidence
- · no release date — neutral maintenance score
- · manual review: no SLA; community-model quality varies; pricing is usage-based
