Runway
Professional-grade AI video generation, in the browser and via API.
About
Generative AI media platform whose flagship Gen models (Gen-4.5, Gen-4 Turbo) turn text, images, and video into new video clips, alongside image generation, video-to-video editing (Aleph), and character performance capture (Act).
The self-serve developer API at api.dev.runwayml.com meters usage in credits and also serves select third-party models (Veo, Seedance, Wan). Web-app subscriptions and API credits are billed separately. Per-model credit rates and clip-length caps below are third-party reported (Sept 2026 roundup) — confirm against the live pricing page.
What it can do
- Text-to-video, image-to-video, video-to-video via Gen-4.5, Gen-4 Turbo, and Aleph 2.0
- Act character performance (webcam-based motion capture) and reference-image character consistency
- Third-party models through one credit balance (Veo 3.1, Seedance, Wan, Hailuo)
- Studio web app: Motion Brush, advanced camera controls, inpainting/remix
- Async task API with auto-retries in official SDKs; failed generations refunded (except moderation rejections)
- Self-serve tiers 1–5 with 1–20 concurrent generations; enterprise tier with SLAs
Setup
- Sign up and open the developer portal at dev.runwayml.com.
- Create a developer organization, generate an API secret, and purchase API credits (~$0.01/credit).
- Install an official SDK (
npm i @runwayml/sdkor the Python client). - Include the dated
X-Runway-Versionheader on every request. - Create a task (e.g. image-to-video) and poll
GET /v1/tasks/{id}untilSUCCEEDED(or usewaitForTaskOutput()). - Download the output URLs; mind per-model limits (Gen-4.5 clips max out at 10 seconds, per third-party coverage).
Prerequisites
A Runway account + developer organization + API secret; prepaid API credits (separate from web-app subscription).
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 7/10
Leading video-generation platform with a genuine self-serve developer API, documented credit billing, and refund-on-failure policy — corroborated by an independent September 2026 API roundup. It's a closed SaaS with credit pricing that gets expensive per clip, Gen-model clips are capped at 10 seconds, and moderation rejections are not refunded. Strong on capability and billing transparency, docked for cost and platform lock-in.
