About

Stable Diffusion WebUI by AUTOMATIC1111 is the classic Gradio-based browser interface for running Stable Diffusion locally. It popularized the now-standard toolkit: txt2img and img2img tabs with samplers/schedulers, seed control, high-res fix, inpainting, a built-in extensions manager, ControlNet integration, and training tabs for LoRA, textual inversion and hypernetworks. Installation is a single launcher script that auto-creates a venv, installs PyTorch and opens the UI in the browser. Important context for 2026: upstream maintenance has slowed to near-stall (last master commit March 2026, a large unmerged PR backlog), and much of the community has moved to actively-maintained forks — but the original remains the most-starred (165k) and most-documented SD interface ever built, and still works well for SD1.5/SDXL workflows.

What it can do

  • **txt2img / img2img**: full sampler, scheduler, CFG, seed, high-res-fix and batch controls
  • **Inpainting & upscaling**: dedicated tabs with mask painting, ESRGAN/SwinIR upscalers
  • **Extensions**: one-click install from the built-in extensions index (hundreds available)
  • **ControlNet**: pose/depth/canny/line-art guided generation via the dominant community extension
  • **Training tabs**: LoRA, textual inversion, hypernetwork and DreamBooth-adjacent training built in
  • **Prompt tools**: prompt matrix, X/Y/Z plot scripts for systematic experimentation
  • **API**: built-in REST API (`--api` flag) used by many third-party apps and bots

Setup

Windows

  1. Install Python 3.10.6 and Git
  2. git clone https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui.git
  3. Place an SD checkpoint (e.g. v1.5) in models/Stable-diffusion/
  4. Run webui-user.bat — it creates the venv, installs PyTorch/CUDA deps, and opens http://127.0.0.1:7860

Linux/macOS

  1. Install Python 3.10.6 and Git
  2. git clone https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui.git && cd stable-diffusion-webui
  3. bash webui.sh → http://127.0.0.1:7860

Notes: launch flags go in COMMANDLINE_ARGS inside webui-user.bat/webui-user.sh (e.g. --xformers, --medvram). Blackwell/50-series users should follow the wiki's 2025 update guide (PyTorch 2.7+, --reinstall-torch).

Prerequisites

- Python 3.10.6 (the version the wiki pins), Git - NVIDIA GPU with 4 GB+ VRAM for SD1.5; 8 GB+ recommended for SDXL (AMD/Intel supported via ROCm/DirectML flags, slower) - ~10 GB free disk (venv + PyTorch + models) - A Stable Diffusion checkpoint (SD1.5/SDXL) from Hugging Face or Civitai
