About
Airavata is an instruction-tuned Hindi chat model from AI4Bharat, the IIT Madras research lab, released in early 2024. It fine-tunes Sarvam AI's OpenHathi base on the IndicInstruct dataset, a collection of human-curated, license-friendly Hindi instruction data translated from English supervision sets via IndicTrans2.
The project deliberately avoids distilling from commercial models like GPT-4, keeping the data pipeline fully open for unrestricted downstream use. Airavata shipped with its datasets, training code forked from AllenAI's open-instruct, and an evaluation suite, anchoring India's open Indic-language model ecosystem.
