Apertus 70B
Switzerland's fully open 70B multilingual model, Apache 2.0.
About
Apertus 70B is the large variant of Apertus, the fully open multilingual language model released September 2, 2025 by the Swiss AI Initiative, a collaboration of EPFL, ETH Zurich, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS). Trained on more than 15 trillion tokens spanning over 1,000 languages with 40% non-English data, it was developed on the Alps supercomputer with over 10 million GPU hours. The name comes from the Latin for open, and the project publishes not just weights but training data documentation, source code, and intermediate checkpoints.
Both the 8B and 70B sizes ship under Apache 2.0, permitting commercial use, and the training corpus was filtered to respect machine-readable website opt-outs and remove personal data, aligning with Swiss data protection law and EU AI Act transparency obligations. The 70B model targets server-class hardware while the 8B runs on workstations, and a 1.5 update in July 2026 added reasoning, multimodal input, and longer context. It is available on Hugging Face under the swiss-ai organization with Swisscom as the main strategic deployment partner.
