CTRL
1.6B conditional transformer with control codes for steerable generation.
About
CTRL, released by Salesforce Research in September 2019, was one of the first large language models designed for controllable generation. The 1.6-billion-parameter model conditions on control codes derived from naturally occurring text structure, specifying domain, subdomain, entities, relationships, dates, and task-specific behavior.
Trained on about 140 gigabytes of text with the first token reserved as the control code, CTRL let users steer style and topic without fine-tuning, anticipating later prompting and instruction-following techniques. It is released under the BSD 3-Clause license.
