About

Doubao-Seed-1.6 is ByteDance's general-purpose multimodal model family, served through Volcano Engine. It takes text, images, and video with a 256K context window and ships in full, thinking, and flash tiers, plus a vision-focused variant. The thinking tier adds adaptive reasoning depth. ByteDance's main selling point is price: the flash tier runs about $0.022 per million input tokens, roughly an order of magnitude under Western frontier APIs, which makes it attractive for high-volume pipelines. Tool calling arrived with the 1.6-Vision release, enabling image operations like crop and annotate inside agentic workflows. Weights are not open; access is API-only through Volcano Engine's Ark platform with an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Independent benchmark comparisons against Claude, GPT, and Gemini with comparable rigor are scarce, so ByteDance's performance claims should be treated as vendor-stated. The model family powers the Doubao consumer app, which is one of China's most-used AI assistants.
