Gen-4
Runway's character-consistent video model with a references system.
About
Gen-4 was announced by Runway on March 31, 2025 as the successor to the Gen-3 Alpha family. Its headline feature is a references system: a user uploads one or more reference images that the model treats as visual anchors, keeping character, object, and scene identity stable across separate generations without any fine-tuning. Runway positioned it as a step forward in fidelity, dynamic motion, and world consistency for generative media.
It launched image-to-video first to paid individual and enterprise customers, with 5 and 10 second clips at 720p, and was followed by Gen-4 Turbo on April 7, 2025, a faster variant that cut generation time roughly fivefold. Like all of Runway's flagship models it is proprietary and served through Runway's platform and API rather than released as open weights.
