Granite 3.2 8B Instruct

Granite 3.2 8B Instruct, released February 2025, adds fine-tuned thinking capabilities to IBM's Granite 3.1 line. A distinctive feature is controllability: the model's reasoning mode can be switched on only when needed via a control-role message, keeping latency and cost down for straightforward queries.

Trained on permissively licensed data plus synthetic reasoning data, it supports 12 languages and long-context tasks like document summarization and RAG. Released under Apache 2.0 with full enterprise positioning, it is a rare combination of a reasoning-capable small model with a clean commercial license.
