Krutrim 1
India's first serious LLM — 7B parameters built for Indic languages by Bhavish Aggarwal's Krutrim.
About
Krutrim 1, launched in January 2024 by Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal's AI venture, was India's first serious large language model: a 7-billion-parameter open-source model trained for Indic-language performance. It made Krutrim India's fastest-ever unicorn ($1B valuation on a $50M round led by Matrix Partners India) and the country's first AI startup to hit that milestone.
The February 2025 Krutrim AI Lab launch expanded the family: Krutrim 2 (12B, Mistral-NeMo architecture, 22 Indian languages, 128K context), Chitrarth 1 (vision-language), Dhwani 1 (speech LLM), Vyakhyarth (Indic embedding model), and Krutrim Translate 1 — all open-sourced. Aggarwal has since committed Rs 2,000 crore of personal capital (plus a pledged Rs 10,000 crore) toward sovereign AI infrastructure including a planned 700B-parameter Krutrim 3 with Lenovo and India's first GB200 supercomputer deployment.
