About

Llama-3.1-Nemotron-70B-Instruct is NVIDIA's alignment-tuned variant of Meta's Llama 3.1 70B, released October 2024. NVIDIA applied its RLHF and DPO post-training pipeline to improve instruction following, helpfulness and safety over the base model, with a 128K-token context window and open weights under the Llama 3.1 Community License. At release it was positioned as one of the strongest open-weight instruction models in its class, with NVIDIA publishing open training-data and fine-tuning recipes to go with it.

It fits the mid-2020s pattern of NVIDIA building a software footprint on top of its hardware: strong open post-training on someone else's base model. Later NVIDIA work moved on to the Nemotron 3 MoE family, so this remains a solid but prior-generation choice for hosted-grade open instruction models.
