Luminous
Europe's multilingual GPT-3-class model family for English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.
About
Luminous was Aleph Alpha's flagship large language model family, built in Heidelberg, Germany as Europe's answer to US-centric models. With over 200 billion parameters at the top end, it was designed from the start for European linguistic diversity, natively covering English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish, and served as AI-as-a-service through an interactive interface.
Luminous reflected Aleph Alpha's sovereignty pitch: European data governance, transparent development on HPE infrastructure, and models tuned for regulated industries and public administration. It was later superseded in the company's lineup by open-weight releases like Kolibri (October 2026), and Aleph Alpha merged with Cohere in 2026, so Luminous is best understood as a historical landmark of the European sovereign-AI push rather than a live product line. Release timing here is era-level from dated coverage.
