MaskGCT

Fully non-autoregressive zero-shot TTS — no text-speech alignment or phoneme durations needed.

About

MaskGCT (September 2024, from the Amphion team) takes a different architectural path from most TTS: a fully non-autoregressive, two-stage masked generative codec transformer that predicts semantic tokens then acoustic tokens — no text-speech alignment supervision and no phoneme-level duration prediction required.

The Amphion codebase is MIT licensed, but note the Hugging Face model weights are tagged CC-BY-NC-4.0 (non-commercial) — a sharper restriction than the code license. For commercial use, verify the checkpoint's terms or use the code with your own trained weights. Quality is competitive with autoregressive zero-shot systems while inference is parallelizable and efficient. It is a research-grade release: excellent for researchers and builders comfortable with academic code, less polished than product-oriented TTS projects. If you want to experiment with NAR TTS architectures, this is the reference implementation.

Benchmarks

Provider-claimed (paper): competitive with state-of-the-art zero-shot TTS on speaker similarity and naturalness — treat as provider-claimed; paper reports LibriSpeech-based evaluations. Independent third-party benchmarks are limited.

Provider-reported unless a source says otherwise. Benchmarks are marketing-adjacent by nature — treat them as directional.

Trust score — 4/10

/10 trustMetrics-checked

Scored 4/10 (metrics tier). Architecturally interesting (fully NAR, no alignment needed) and paper-backed, but the weights carry a CC-BY-NC-4.0 tag — non-commercial despite the MIT code license. Docked six points: (1) non-commercial weights rule out product use; (2) research-grade code and documentation — expect friction; (3) tiny adoption (388 HF downloads); (4) quality claims are paper-reported on the authors' own evaluations; (5) 2024-era with no updates; (6) no commercial support or hosted option. For researchers and architecture explorers only.

  • · manual review: fully NAR architecture is interesting; research-grade code, expect friction; tiny adoption; no hosted option; license: CC-BY-NC-4.0 weights (non-commercial) despite MIT code — commercial use restricted
