NLLB-200
Single open model translating across 200 languages.
About
NLLB-200 (No Language Left Behind) is Meta's landmark machine translation model from July 2022, the first single model to translate across 200 languages, including 55 African languages with high-quality results. It comes in sizes from 600 million to 54.5 billion parameters and averaged 44% improvement over prior state-of-the-art translation models, rising to 70% for some African and Indian languages.
Meta open-sourced the model along with the FLORES-200 evaluation benchmark covering 40,000 translation directions, and awarded $200,000 in grants for nonprofit applications. Its techniques now power translation across Facebook, Instagram, and Wikipedia's content translation tool, which gained 10 previously unsupported languages.
