Vicuna 13B
The 2023 open chatbot that reached 90 percent of ChatGPT quality.
About
Vicuna 13B is an open source chatbot released in March 2023 by the LMSYS team at UC Berkeley, CMU, Stanford, and UC San Diego. It fine tunes LLaMA on user shared conversations collected from ShareGPT, and its headline result, judged by GPT-4, was reaching roughly 90 percent of ChatGPT quality at a training cost of around 300 dollars.
Vicuna became a landmark of the early open weights wave: it powered the Chatbot Arena, spawned countless derivatives, and demonstrated that high quality chat behavior could be distilled cheaply. Later versions refined tokenization and training loss computation. The weights carry a non commercial license, so check terms before any commercial use.
